Provider Spotlight: Margie Haber Studio

Sawyer partners with hundreds of educators who are stars in their communities. From inspiring class content to engaging teaching styles, these educators are known for their enriching activities that empower both children and parents alike.

We got the opportunity to chat with Alyssa Reichel & Chris Schellenger, instructors and studio coordinator at Margie Haber Studio, which offers acting classes to children and teens in Los Angeles, to learn about inspiring moments in and out of the classroom and how Sawyer helps them grow.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! I’d love to hear a bit more about you and why you started your business.

Alyssa: While Margie Haber Studio was originally formed in 1986, I came to the studio as a student in 2018 and fell in love with the art of creation, and the playful, imaginative approach - it reminded me why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. I quickly knew this would be my creative home base, and when the opportunity to teach our kids classes presented itself I knew this was what I was meant to do! I’ve worked as a professional child care provider for years, and have always had a passion for working with kids - having the opportunity to combine that with my lifelong passion for acting has been such a gift!

Chris: I started teaching in an effort to give back to the community that taught me so much and supported me when I felt alone. I found a home in the theatre and peace with acting. I had so many amazing mentors and guides along my journey it only felt right to pass that torch to other young actors!

Can you describe an inspiring moment you’ve had as an educator?

Alyssa: While I always tell my kids that booking shouldn’t be the goal, it’s always amazing when I get that call or text from parents and I get to celebrate with them! My very first private coaching session as an instructor, my kiddo ended up booking a role on a Disney Channel show - which was my biggest dream as a kid myself. Playing even a small part in that journey is incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

Chris: So many inspiring moments! One that sticks out for me is observing a student, who came to me YEARS ago, find their personal power through acting! When they started they were withdrawn and doubted themselves immensely. Through our work together they have blossomed to be the top of the class not only in my class but in their day-to-day life as well!

What’s the most rewarding thing about teaching children?

Alyssa: Everyday I get to help these kids not only grow in their confidence and break out of their shells, but get one step closer to their dreams. As a fellow creative and artist, having someone in your corner who believes in you makes all the difference - getting to see these kids shine and soar is unbelievably fulfilling, and I am so proud of their growth!

Chris: Seeing the lightbulb turn on or something click for them! I love when they put the pieces together and learn something new!

What’s one time a child surprised you and made your day?

Alyssa: My kids love to draw me pictures and make me notes, and they always mean so much to me! I have a few “best teacher ever” notes hung up on my desk that always cheer me up.

Chris: After wrapping up an intensive, a student wrote me the most lovely thank you note that I still keep with me as a reminder of the profound impact teachers have on not only their students, but the world!

On a similar note, what’s the funniest thing a child has done in your class?

Alyssa: While my students truly have me laughing every single class, one moment that stands out to me is when I had given the kids a very over the top, bold, and sassy character from a comedy… one of my kids asked to use my sunglasses as a prop, and they were way too big for them. They kept falling off throughout the “scene” and the whole class was trying to keep it together!

Chris: One of the funniest moments in class would be the time a student impersonated me. They had the whole class laughing at their accuracy and commitment!

Why is after school/extracurricular enrichment and camp so important for children?

Alyssa: I was incredibly anxious as a child, and being involved in the arts absolutely became my safe space. I hope that every child can find an activity where they can feel free to be themselves, fully express themselves without fear of judgement, and forget about anything else for those moments in the classroom.

Chris: Children need to express themselves!!! Extracurricular enrichment programs or camp gives them an outlet to let loose and find their creative power! It carries over into success in other arenas of their life too. I hear from parents the difference being in class makes on their children’s whole lives!

How do you think children can discover their passions when they’re not in school or your programs?

Alyssa: Playing pretend, leaning into their imaginations… and reading! I discovered so many passions and interests that I didn’t even know I had through books.

Chris: Play. Discover. Be curious!! With the assistance of their parent(s) - pursuing what their interests are. From drawing or painting to building model airplanes or cooking! Exposure is key! Explore the amazing world around us!

What is your favorite Sawyer feature?

Alyssa: The ability to embed the widgets on our website pages makes it so much easier for parents to view our class options and sign up!

What's one trick you learned from another educator that you still practice?

Alyssa: I’ve learned so much from Chris, our veteran kids and teens instructor - he truly taught me everything I know! The biggest takeaways I’ve learned from him would be living in the unknown as an actor, not being afraid of making mistakes or looking silly - which is what makes us human, and the unlimited power of our imagination!

Chris: Our founder and leader, Margie Haber has taught me SO much. Not just about acting, but about myself- which in turn makes me a better actor and educator. One trick I’d say is Margie’s phrase, “embrace the imperfection.” It’s what makes us human!

Have you discovered new customers on the Sawyer Marketplace?

Alyssa: Absolutely! We have reached so many new students that wouldn’t have found us otherwise, and we have exponentially increased our class numbers!

How do you balance your time between running your business (from an operational perspective) and teaching/connecting with parents and students?

Alyssa: We’re so lucky to have such an incredible office staff that keeps the studio running and supports us! It’s important to me that I keep in contact with the parents over email and social media even when the kids aren’t in class so I can continue following along with their creative journeys and celebrating their wins! I always want to cheer them on from the sidelines.

Chris: We are very lucky to have a full time office staff to run the business side of our studio. My time is spent creating lesson plans and connecting with the parents and students; pushing their craft to the next level!

How has Sawyer helped your business?

Alyssa: Sawyer has been instrumental in connecting us with new students. We’ve had kids and teens join us from all across the country for our summer camps through Sawyer, and I doubt we would have been able to reach those out of state communities without the help of Sawyer!
