Provider Spotlight: Kidville UWS

Sawyer partners with hundreds of educators who are stars in their communities. From inspiring class content to engaging teaching styles, these educators are known for their enriching activities that empower both children and parents alike.

We got the opportunity to chat with Nikki MIlls, the owner of Kidville UWS, which offers a preschool alternative program, summer camp, open play, music, art, dance, and more to children in NYC, to learn how Sawyer helps them grow.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! I’d love to hear a bit more about you and why you started your business.

I have worked with children and done gymnastics almost my entire life. After college I got a job at a children’s facility and really enjoyed it. After a few other jobs and having my 1st child, I went back to managing a gymnastics facility. After my 2nd child I decided I wanted to give it a try on my own. I really liked Kidville and what it had to offer so I reached out about being a franchisee.

Can you describe an inspiring moment you’ve had as an educator?

Wow, there are so many.  I think it was the 1st time I saw this one child walk. He struggled for such a long time and finally right around 2 he took his 1st steps. He was so determined but his legs were just not strong enough yet. When I saw him walk and how happy he was, it makes you think what an inspiration… We take these things for granted but it is such a struggle for some and to watch their peers doing things they know they should be able to do but can’t yet especially when they are so young and cannot talk or fully express their feelings.

What’s the most rewarding thing about teaching children?

The surprised joy on their face when they realized they have accomplished something.

What’s one time a child surprised you and made your day?

This one child was in our program and he was a little delayed and very shy. He would barely make eye contact with me.  He graduated from our program about 6 months ago but still comes here for playspace. The other day he walked by my office and said “Hi Nikki, do you like my shirt?” but the way he said it, in a joking manner like we have been friends for years and talk all the time. It was so surprising to me, like one day he just turned into a different child! Now he does it every time he walks by me and it still makes me smile and laugh.

On a similar note, what’s the funniest thing a child has done in your class?

One time, we were using gluesticks and I asked a child to turn his so more glue would be available. He said, “Ms. Nikki, that is just not feasible.” I just started laughing.

Why is after school/extracurricular enrichment and camp so important for children?

It helps them become more well rounded individuals and there are opportunities that they may not have had otherwise. They can also develop new interests and meet people from different cultures. They keep kids busy and active.

How do you think children can discover their passions when they’re not in school or your programs?

I am a big believer in learning through play. They can discover they love building through legos, or how much they love to paint through art.

What is your favorite Sawyer feature?

Duplicating!! I love that you can duplicate anything: Schedules, camps, semesters, individual classes, etc

What's one trick you learned from another educator that you still practice?

When you have a shy kid that is not too interested in you as a teacher, let that child be but find another child nearby and try and have the best time with them. The other child usually sees this and wants to join in. Now it is on their terms and not yours, that usually helps the child feel more comfortable.

Have you discovered new customers on the Sawyer Marketplace?

Yes! We have met so many new clients via Sawyer.

How do you balance your time between running your business (from an operational perspective) and teaching/connecting with parents and students?

I try to spend time at our front desk so I can put a face to the names. I like to check in on our clients and speak to all the trials to see how they enjoyed the class. When I am in my office my door is almost always open so when parents/caregivers are sitting on our benches waiting for a child or just feeding them I come out and we have conversations all the time.

How has Sawyer helped your business?

We have so many new clients that had not heard of us before. Sawyer has really helped us get our name out there.
